Private Teacher Volume 3 - Censored

Postby roses_007 » Sat May 12, 2012 9:22 am

I just got Private Teacher volume 3 in the mail and while I was reading it I realized it had been heavily censored. Is it suppose to be that way or was this a mistake of some kind because previous volumes were not censored like this. I hope someone can enlighten me.

 Censored how? Like certain lines omitted or like beams of light where the xxx should be? Really hate those! Not that I wouldn't buy it anyway. But but... This is just such a disappointment, I was really looking forward to it too!

Please tell me the censorship isn't too noticeable? Sometimes Juné does it quite gracefully, which I appreciate. Like in Tyrant Falls in Love vol. 5 Souichi's penis is censored in a way I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen the original art. I was bummed though cos Takanaga Hinako's art is usually pretty implicit anyway so when she finally took the step to show a little more, censoring it seemed kind of...emasculating.

It's just like you guessed, lines are missing, beams of light, non-distinguishable body parts, they erased or blurred the steamy good stuff. I have to say that this censorship is a big disappointment because I was so excited about the next volume coming out with previous volumes not being edited. I hope they reprint it uncensored.

Also, Tyrant vol.5 was edited, were any of the other volumes editied?

Not sure... The censorship in vol. 5 is the only one I've noticed. Mainly because I was a bit surprised that Takanaga Hinako would draw such an explicit illustration in the first place and knew where to look for it. It wasn't there in the Juné edition. :(

This sucks. I thought the censorship issues were getting better but apparently no. :x I don't read these books just for the mature scenes but the light beams and what have yous are just distracting not to mention that tampering with the artist's original artwork is plain wrong. I think I've heard something about a new law in Japan that might explain this but surely this should not affect the States or the international market...?

It does affect it...the J pubs license the volume, and it'll likely be whatever the most recent ed is, and the US pubs get it like that, bars of light and all. So if a reprint run means that censoring has been added by the Jpub, it's really really likely the files the US pub gets after that point will too. Very frustrating.

I can understand that the U.S. pub uses what JAP pub gives them but to have the tankobon version more censored than magazine version, confuses me. The tankobon version is the book you buy, which is for private so shouldn't the magazine be censored not the book.

Re: Tyrant Falls in Love vol 5 - on what page / at what scene does the censorship occur? I just compared the June edition to the German one (which I believe to be an exact replica of the Japanese tankoubon - art-wise). And I can't see any censorship done by June, but I might have missed it. I'm quite curious / would really appreciate the answer! Or was the comparison to the original art mentioned above done to the Japanese magazine edition? Thanks!

Re: Private Teacher vol 3 - is it censored as compared to the original/Japanese tankoubon? Or was it just a guess it's censored (i.e., not necessarily bu June, but maybe in the original tankoubon too)? Thanks!

Yes, after June's Maiden Rose and Border (as well as the first Finder volumes I read) and a number of other fairly explicit titles left uncensored, it's hard to believe June would come back to censorship...I hope not!

That depends...the mags are sold in the adult/porn section of non bookstores...the books are in bookstores and not at konbini, etc. so how the work is ditro seems to play a role in how the law is implemented. Also, the tanko comes out AFTER the the mag ed, so it may also be the mag was out before the Jpub had to act on the new law. Also, the mag section and the book section of a pub are often diff depts...so editorial decisions may vary...and even vary pub to pub ...things can be kinda arbitrary and it's infuriating, but there ya go.

@sun22 The censoring in Tyrant vol 5 was done in the "After" chapter page 136, I think. Though now that you mention it, it could be that only the magazine version was uncensored and June just used the material from the tankoubon.

Still even if that's the case, couldn't they just ask for the original material when buying the licence? I mean, with this economy, how is June along with any other company publishing these works in English supposed to fight against things like online scanlation groups to stay afloat? Seeing as scanlators usually seem to use the magazine issues with the uncensored art, it's almost like you get less if you buy it. :?

I confess I read scanlations sometimes simply because I'm too impatient to wait for the books to come out. I buy them when they do. But if I didn't feel that moral obligation to support the industry (which I'm sure not all people reading manga do) I'd probably be happy with the scanlations especially if they're uncensored when the published books are not. I'll continue to buy from June regardless but I'm afraid if this continues it will affect the sales.... :(

I hear ya there - I mean, if I read the scans back before something got licensed, I'll buy the book after because that's just how I do things, but I keep my copy of the scans (for me only - I don't share them). I'm surely not going to delete them if the original scans are unedited and the licensing company got stuck with (or for some odd reason elected to add) edited material to the printed version.

Seems silly though. Why censor anything, anywhere (in any country)? If you don't want certain age groups to see it, put a warning on it and shrink wrap it. We're adults and we can choose what to buy and what not to buy. If we regret it later, well that's our own problem. We were warned.
