On June 3rd, 2014 we announced that volumes one and two of Captain Ken by famous manga artist Osamu Tezuka will be fully translated into English through our Kickstarter. We are happy to announce that we have finally reached our first goal of 13,000 as of June 18th, 2014. Now both volumes of Captain Ken will officially be translated into English by DMP Platinum through our Kickstarter and be shipped onto western shores for Kickstarter backers to receive in February 2015.
However, the fun has only started as we are continuing to move forward onto our stretch goals! At 14,000 all backers will receive a set of exclusive limited edition Captain Ken trading card sets. In a set of four, each card has detailed descriptions of characters and images pulled from the stunning artwork of the books. Not only that, but if you bring your cards to our convention booths (Digital Manga, Akadot, or Project H), then you’ll receive three dollars off any purchase.
At our final stretch goal of 16,000, all backers will receive a beautiful 24×36 poster of some of the iconic scenes from the volume. There are two posters, one for each volume and backers will receive the poster according to the volume they ordered. If you order both volumes then you will receive both posters!
Backers can pledge to the Captain Ken Kickstarter here:
Gardena, CA (June 3, 2014) Digital Manga, Inc. has launched a new project on crowd-funding site Kickstarter to translate and publish Osamu Tezuka’s shonen title Captain Ken volumes 1 and 2 for ages 16+ in English for the first time. From June 3 until July 3, fans will be able to pledge for publication of the books and receive Kickstarter exclusive rewards including early release copies of both volumes, the digital companion with featured translation notes, decals, bandanas, messenger bags, and a handmade plush of Captain Ken’s horse, Arrow.
If fans pledge a total of $13,000 or more by the deadline, both volumes of Captain Ken will be released simultaneously for Kickstarter backers to receive in February of 2015, before hitting bookstore shelves in March of 2014, through DMI’s Platinum Manga classics imprint. Swallowing the Earth, Barbara, Unico, Triton Vol. 1 & 2, and Atom Cat were all successfully funded in previous Kickstarter campaigns, but Captain Ken will be first young adult fiction to add to Digital Manga’s Tezuka collection.
Captain Ken takes place after Earth’s colonization of Mars, causing the uprising and civil conflict between the space cowboy colonizers and the native Martians. The story opens up with a diary entry from a Martian, recalling the history of how Earthlings came to be the supreme rulers of Mars.
“It started in the year 1983, when these ‘Earthlings’ landed on our home. Ourancestors approached the strange creatures, but that was when their terrorstarted…we didn’t know for how long this dark period would last. Then one day, he came…”
This savior who comes to their aid is Captain Ken. He is a mysterious vigilante from Earth who travels to Mars on a secret mission with Arrow, his noble steed who also happens to be a fully stocked armory on four legs. The arrival of this young gunslinger is the start of a chain of events which includes the unveiling of Governor Devon’s corrupted government and the retaliation against Martian slavery by rebel Martians. Ken’s first appearance on Mars also coincidentally coincides with the arrival of an Earthling girl named Kenn Minakami, who bears striking resemblance to him and thus raises further questions and speculations about Ken’s true identity and his role in this fight for Mars.
In this young adult manga, Tezuka pays homage to some of the most prominent historical moments such as the Gold Rush in the West, colonization, genocide, and nuclear warfare. “Tezuka’s experiences during WWII really colored his perception of the possibilities of peaceful co-existence and he explores that theme again and again in works like Captain Ken, Zero Men, Adventure of Rock, and, of course, Astro Boy,” explains Greg Baker, creator and author of the fan website Tezuka in English. “I’ve long thought that Tezuka’s classic shonen adventure stories have been largely overlooked by English publishers. It’s such a big part of his library too”.
Captain Ken is the first of the 250 titles in Tezuka’s manga backlist to be published in English by DMI.

Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 12:00PM PST (Noon) | Room Panels 3
The DMI/DMG panel started on time, at 12, noon. — We opened by applauding to the crowd, letting them know this was the biggest response we’ve had for a DMI/DMG panel for all of our conventions of 2014. The first set of slides informed customers of our newest releases, including the newest Kickstarter campaign for Captain Ken. We then explained the workings behind DMG and how it’s like to have your name in a manga. A lot of people scooted to the front of their seats to learn about the behind the scenes process of translating, editing and lettering for manga books. After the panel ended, we received a large handful of questions about our newest licenses, particularly for “No Pants, No Problem”, and more questions about the specifics in becoming a member of the Digital Manga Guild. Press was also there to report on our newest licenses and announcements.
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 10:00PM PST | Room Panels 2
Our Project-H panel at Fanime 2014 was a big success. With a line waiting to get in, the Project-H panel was able to open the doors to its fans right on time. The room could seat 800 and from the start, we had about 480 filled. Though fans were stumbling over each other to get a front row seating, we were not able to start the panel on time due to technical difficulties with the large theater screen, provided by the hotel. We improvised and played a game of Jan Ken Pon (Rock Paper Scissors) with the crowd for them to have a chance to earn some free books. There was a tie breaker and both guests had to stand in front of the stage for a “face off” to see who would be the true winner of our hentai manga. We delayed the crowd as much as we could until the Fanime staffers told us there was nothing they could do to remove the technical difficulty. Although there was a large black square covering a part of our presentation, we joked, “It’s okay, we’re used to being censored.” The crowd was very understanding and laughed at our humor.
We gave the crowd an interactive panel that made them “Ooou!” and “Ahh!” over our various slides. Fans were excited to see new titles and the new plans we have for Project-H. As soon as the slides were over, we opened the remainder of the panel for Q&A. Fans had all kinds of questions from, “Can you release yuri?” to “What are the current hentai trends in Japan compared to the US?” Anime News Network was there as press and covered our newest licenses and announcements.
