Gardena, CA (June 3, 2014) Digital Manga, Inc. has launched a new project on crowd-funding site Kickstarter to translate and publish Osamu Tezuka’s shonen title Captain Ken volumes 1 and 2 for ages 16+ in English for the first time. From June 3 until July 3, fans will be able to pledge for publication of the books and receive Kickstarter exclusive rewards including early release copies of both volumes, the digital companion with featured translation notes, decals, bandanas, messenger bags, and a handmade plush of Captain Ken’s horse, Arrow.

If fans pledge a total of $13,000 or more by the deadline, both volumes of Captain Ken will be released simultaneously for Kickstarter backers to receive in February of 2015, before hitting bookstore shelves in March of 2014, through DMI’s Platinum Manga classics imprint. Swallowing the Earth, Barbara, Unico, Triton Vol. 1 & 2, and Atom Cat were all successfully funded in previous Kickstarter campaigns, but Captain Ken will be first young adult fiction to add to Digital Manga’s Tezuka collection.

Captain Ken takes place after Earth’s colonization of Mars, causing the uprising and civil conflict between the space cowboy colonizers and the native Martians. The story opens up with a diary entry from a Martian, recalling the history of how Earthlings came to be the supreme rulers of Mars.

“It started in the year 1983, when these ‘Earthlings’ landed on our home. Ourancestors approached the strange creatures, but that was when their terrorstarted…we didn’t know for how long this dark period would last. Then one day, he came…”

This savior who comes to their aid is Captain Ken. He is a mysterious vigilante from Earth who travels to Mars on a secret mission with Arrow, his noble steed who also happens to be a fully stocked armory on four legs. The arrival of this young gunslinger is the start of a chain of events which includes the unveiling of Governor Devon’s corrupted government and the retaliation against Martian slavery by rebel Martians. Ken’s first appearance on Mars also coincidentally coincides with the arrival of an Earthling girl named Kenn Minakami, who bears striking resemblance to him and thus raises further questions and speculations about Ken’s true identity and his role in this fight for Mars.

In this young adult manga, Tezuka pays homage to some of the most prominent historical moments such as the Gold Rush in the West, colonization, genocide, and nuclear warfare. “Tezuka’s experiences during WWII really colored his perception of the possibilities of peaceful co-existence and he explores that theme again and again in works like Captain Ken, Zero Men, Adventure of Rock, and, of course, Astro Boy,” explains Greg Baker, creator and author of the fan website Tezuka in English. “I’ve long thought that Tezuka’s classic shonen adventure stories have been largely overlooked by English publishers. It’s such a big part of his library too”.

Captain Ken is the first of the 250 titles in Tezuka’s manga backlist to be published in English by DMI.

Fanime 2014 DMI/DMG & Project-H Panels

DMI/DMG Panel
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 12:00PM PST (Noon) | Room Panels 3

The DMI/DMG panel started on time, at 12, noon. — We opened by applauding to the crowd, letting them know this was the biggest response we’ve had for a DMI/DMG panel for all of our conventions of 2014. The first set of slides informed customers of our newest releases, including the newest Kickstarter campaign for Captain Ken. We then explained the workings behind DMG and how it’s like to have your name in a manga. A lot of people scooted to the front of their seats to learn about the behind the scenes process of translating, editing and lettering for manga books. After the panel ended, we received a large handful of questions about our newest licenses, particularly for “No Pants, No Problem”, and more questions about the specifics in becoming a member of the Digital Manga Guild. Press was also there to report on our newest licenses and announcements.

Project-H Panel
Saturday, May 24th, 2014 | 10:00PM PST | Room Panels 2

Our Project-H panel at Fanime 2014 was a big success. With a line waiting to get in, the Project-H panel was able to open the doors to its fans right on time.  The room could seat 800 and from the start, we had about 480 filled. Though fans were stumbling over each other to get a front row seating, we were not able to start the panel on time due to technical difficulties with the large theater screen, provided by the hotel. We improvised and played a game of Jan Ken Pon (Rock Paper Scissors) with the crowd for them to have a chance to earn some free books. There was a tie breaker and both guests had to stand in front of the stage for a “face off” to see who would be the true winner of our hentai manga. We delayed the crowd as much as we could until the Fanime staffers told us there was nothing they could do to remove the technical difficulty. Although there was a large black square covering a part of our presentation, we joked, “It’s okay, we’re used to being censored.” The crowd was very understanding and laughed at our humor.

We gave the crowd an interactive panel that made them “Ooou!” and “Ahh!” over our various slides. Fans were excited to see new titles and the new plans we have for Project-H. As soon as the slides were over, we opened the remainder of the panel for Q&A. Fans had all kinds of questions from, “Can you release yuri?” to “What are the current hentai trends in Japan compared to the US?” Anime News Network was there as press and covered our newest licenses and announcements.

Age Called Blue by Est Em:

Billy is the guitarist for a relatively unknown band called The Idiots. On a fateful Wednesday, two perceived unrelated events occurred: (1) his idol passed away, and (2) his roommate stole both his money and guitar. Surrounding these two events is a series of chance meetings, painful realizations, excessive alcoholism, listlessness, flashbacks, and love. This is a terribly poignant story defining the unyielding love found between a vocalist and his guitarist.

Included with this manga are a couple of side stories. One is a story of the fantastical love between an artist and his subject. The other is a story of childhood friends turned lovers and their journey through life.

Sweet Blue Flowers Vol. 1 by Takako Shimura:

Once childhood friends, sweet Aki and shy Fumi, unexpectedly reunite the year they enter separate all-girls high schools.

Fumi has learned that romance can have its thorns but in meeting an upperclassman she discovers that, like a flower hibernating through the winter, love too can grow and bloom again come spring. But has there in fact been a little flower, almost too small to see, at her side all along…?

Join Aki and Fumi in the first volume of Takako Shimura’s touching coming-of-age series as they discover more about who they are, and who they can become.

Kimagure Orange Road Vol. 1 by Izumi Matsumoto:

Teenage romance meets fantasy in this series as a love triangle develops between the main character, an indecisive esper named Kyōsuke Kasuga, Madoka Ayukawa, a mercurial and enigmatic girl with a tough past, and Hikaru Hiyama, Madoka’s ditzy and energetic best friend. Kyōsuke falls in love with Madoka, and Madoka wants to return those feelings, but can not because of Hikaru’s involvement with Kyōsuke.

Written by Izumi Matsumoto and serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, it was later adapted into an anime series broadcast on Nippon Television, animated by Studio Pierrot and directed by veteran animator Osamu Kobayashi with character designs by Akemi Takada and scripts by Kenji Terada.

All Purpose Chemistry Club! Vol. 2 by Sho Hidaka:

Ready for another exciting adventure with the All Purpose Chemistry Club? If you said no, we’ll take that as a yes. If you said yes, then prepare yourself for more ghosts, body swapping pills, talking puppets and… wait… is that Boss with a girl?! WHAT?!
It’s just the usual everyday crazy antics of the All Purpose Chemistry Club! So what are you still reading this for? Buy it and get in on some of this awesomeness already! Geez.

EREMENTAR GERADE: Flag of Bluesky Vol. 4 by Mayumi Azuma:

The long journey to Vapell Viji has finally come to an end. Unfortunately, the company arrives in the land renowned for its delicious cuisine while it is in the midst of some dire circumstances. Not long after their arrival the Princess Achea and her companions witness the orchard of life deteriorate! Many trials arise for Achea, once she offers aid to the queen of Vapell Viji and their dying tree.

Ashlyn has a strange power: she hears the voices of the past that linger in this world. Since she was a child, she’s lived a noisy and lonesome life. But when she hears the rumors of angels living in an ancient castle in Budapest, she can’t help but venture into their forest. There, she sees a muscular man covered in fresh blood, a man who advances on her with murder in his eyes. But instead of fear, she feels a complete and total silence descend upon her. And an indescribable sense of security…

The Most Coveted Prize: Alena, the 19-year-old scion of a well-respected, old Russian family, falls in love at first sight with Kiryl, a man she met in the lobby of a high-class hotel. He cuts a devilishly stylish figure, so she has no idea that this man who wears an air of danger around him like cologne has painfully risen up from the slums to become a billionaire. With his sweet words and the simple press of his lips to the back of her hand, Alena readily offers up her body and her heart to him. She could have no idea, at the height of her happiness, that the dazzling pleasures he offers her are, for him, a means to revenge!

The Darkest Kiss Vol. 1: …So, will this ugly angel pull me out of chaos—? Long ago, beautiful, immortal warriors were created by the gods to maintain law and order in heaven. But these warriors fell – Now, housing demons within themselves, the warriors live on earth for centuries in solitary, waiting for the god’s grace. Anya, the goddess of anarchy, arrives in Budapest to check out on these rumors. Contrary to her beautiful appearance, wild Anya brings disaster and chaos wherever she goes. These warriors were just supposed to be a great time-killer; however…!?

Wife by Arrangement: Heather has been charmed by Lorenzo, a rich elite from Sicily. He’s a gentleman, but weak and powerless in the face of his overwhelming brother Renato. Suspicious that Heather may simply be after their fortune, Renato investigates and subjects the woman to a bizarre test, even going as far as to tempt her with a large sum of money. She refuses, and so he rewards her by ordering her to marry his brother…

Raintree: Haunted Vol. 1:  Hope Malory’s first day as a homicide detective isn’t going well. Not only assigned to her first gruesome murder, but also partnered to the infamously eccentric Gideon Raintree. Gideon is quite handsome, but a tad creepy, seemingly talking to the very air! Hope’s homicide investigation reveals some intriguing facts: the victims roommate is none other than Gideon’s cousin! With supernatural meddling, suspicious circumstances, and romance in the precinct, Raintree: Haunted starts off with a bloody bang!

Ordinary Girl In A Tiara:  Vintage clothing lover Caro decides she wants an ordinary life with an ordinary man after a failed relationship with an upperclass, cheating fiance. But it’s terribly difficult to be ordinary when you’re friends with a princess! Caro is offered the chance of a lifetime: swap lives with her good friend Princess Lotty of Montluce! The catch? She needs to play the girlfriend to Lotty’s unwilling fiance, Prince Philippe. Lotty and Philippe have dreams of their own and marriage to each other isn’t in cards, but not if Dowager Blanche, Lotty’s grandmother, has anything to say about it! Swapping lives sounds all well and good, however if Caro and Philippe can’t play a convincing couple, it’s over! Philippe is as far from ordinary as he can get—not exactly Caro’s type. Can an eccentric fashion fan and a pompous prince pull it off in this dramedy of romantic deceptions? What happens when they both start to believe the lie?

The Greek Tycoon’s Defiant Bride:  Maribel has a crush on her cousin’s boyfriend, Leonidas, the Greek billionaire who constantly makes the tabloid headlines. She has a passionate one night stand with him, the day her cousin dies in a car crash! Maribel is convinced that she is nothing but a poor replacement for her cousin, yet she can’t help feeling hopelessly destroyed by Leonidas’s cold goodbye the morning after their tryst. Two years later, she is unexpectedly reunited with Leonidas, but she has a secret that she can never reveal to him. She had given birth to his child. Now, the truth has leaked to the paparazzi and tabloids alike!

Virgin Salve, Barbarian King Vol. 1: The beginning of the fifth century—the flourishing Roman Empire has been attacked by the Visigoths and is becoming a lawless state. Julia, the daughter of an aristocrat, escapes the chaos and conflagration that fills the town—but is then captured by the mob. A strong Visigoth man accompanied by a wolf saves her at the last minute. The man with the long blond hair is Wulfric, the King of Wolves! Julia thanks him, but he only takes her in his arms and says, “Rome is ours. And so are you.” Julia is abducted as a slave! A historical epic of love and fate!

The Tycoon’s Pregnant Mistress: Billionaire Chrysander Anetakis is known to the world as a rich Greek hotel magnate, but Marley Jameson knows him differently. They made passionate love whenever business took him to New York, but Marley’s hopes for future happiness are dashed when he tells her, “This isn’t a relationship. You’re just my mistress,” and kicks her out of his penthouse. Still reeling in shock, she fails to notice the kidnappers trailing her on that shadowy New York street. Chrysander thinks she has left him for good, until she is discovered three months later, suffering from amnesia, and pregnant to boot!

Her Sheikh Boss: Claudia is a hardworking personal secretary, working 24/7 for her arrogant boss, Samir, the CEO of a shipping company. The only reason she is so devoted to her work is that she is in love with her boss, who, despite his arrogance, is very charming. One day, Samir gives an unexpected gift to Claudia, who has been working so hard that she forgot her own birthday. The gift is an order to join him on a business trip to his home country in the desert. Is it going to be a romantic getaway for just the two of them? Or will it all fall apart when she finds out that he is a sheikh who is already engaged?

INTERVIEW WITH PUKU OKUYAMA

Author of Caramel, The Rule of Standing on Tiptoe, and Warning! Whispers of Love

1. What are some things you like to do while you work to help you concentrate?

I try several methods to help me concentrate, but mostly I listen to music or even sing to keep me on track. But silence also keeps me focused on my work as well.

2. Which manga(s) do you like reading?

I enjoy reading comedy manga.

3. What type of food do you like?

Pudding. I don’t have a hobby of making sweets but pudding I sometimes make them on my own.

4. How do you usually spend your days off?

I usually spend my days off by going to karaoke, spending time going out with my husband, or simply doing work.

5. There were many scenes within Warning! Whispers of Love where Nagura found Hajime to be “cute.” In your personal opinion, in what sort of situation(s) would you say that a guy is being “cute?”

I find men cute when they are enthusiastic about what they are doing and in high spirits because just watching them puts me be in a happy mood. I believe people who can be passionate at what they are doing have great talent.

6. When you are drawing, which part of the characters do you draw first?

I usually start off drawing from the face. Often in order I first start from the outline, the nose, the eyes/eyebrows, hair and then mouth. When I’m inking, I ink the facial features first then proceed to line the contour of the face.

7. What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy painting the base colors.

A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Puku Okuyama for answering our questions and for the amazing work she has done.
